Econ0009: VAT registered business stocks, start-ups and closures
ETES3, Welsh Assembly Government
The statistics are no longer produced by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. These statistics have been replaced by the Business Demography series produced by the Office for National Statistics, which is the only official source of information on business start-ups and closures. These statistics can be found on StatsWales under Statistics on Businesses and Business Demography.

These data are counts of VAT registered enterprises (stocks), registrations and de-registrations by industry in each year since 1994. Data are given for local authorities in Wales, the regions of the UK and the UK as a whole. The data are derived from an extract taken in May 2007 from the Inter-Departmental Business Register maintained by the Office for National Statistics, which itself is fed by the administrative system used to record VAT registrations and de-registrations.
The stock of VAT registered enterprises is the position on 1 January of each year, while the registrations and de-registrations data represent the numbers of such during each calendar year.
The data represent whole VAT registered enterprises, so that enterprises with a number of local units spread around the country are counted only once, usually according to the location of the head office of the enterprise.
All estimates exclude enterprises that are registered at the address of the Official Receiver. Additionally, where there are large numbers of very small VAT registrations at one address and the address does not necessarily represent the location of the activities of these enterprise, the enterprises have also been excluded to avoid giving a false impression of growth in these locations.
Many of the figures have been revised since previously published. This is as a result of adjustments made to the series to take account of lags in the administrative system used to record VAT registrations ad de-registrations.
Figures are rounded to the nearest 5 and so there may be some other apparent slight discrepancies between the sum of constituent items and the totals as shown.
